NEUROSIS OF THE RICH
By The Mighty Sparrow

Contrary to yesterday when wealth was a social law
The official concern today revolves around the poor
Their sexual fancies and wild emotions,
Unemployment, education, ethnic composition
Have now become interesting studies of exhaustive attention.
While the rich become jealous, cannot live with this rejection
They would like to be the object of concern but idleness has no value of its own
Their methodology of conspicuous consumption and waste
Display of diamonds and rubies is now commonplace
For the theory today is that wealth in its sphere
Is a source of destruction, frustration and fear
For the wealthy life is built on despair.

Once upon a time people only had to know
That you had more than just a dime to make of you a hero
But now that present scholars and great professors,
Academic educators, religious advisors
Occupy all their time working on some 'Save The Poor' project
The rich ignored, become a sad victim of neglect
They have got so much, yet to find companionship
Every month they would take a pleasure trip
To gamble away sums of money on roulette and dice
Coasting and toasting and boasting to be recognised
Knowing deep down inside they are faced with extinction
For wealth in itself is no sort of distinction
They exist in a state of disillusion.

It is sad when a high class broad ravaged by gross ill health
Throw she pride overboard, then combining her rank and wealth
With obesity, swollen, tortured face,
Advanced nymphomania and repellent grace
Pay out large sums of money trying to procure some loving
But love is a thing just cannot be purchased
They will flock to bars, luncheons and parties
Flashing cars and counting calories
In an effort to create an aspect of great importance
Flaunting their wealth and their rank to gain acceptance
Yet that feeling of guilt from deliberate mistakes
Night after night keep them ever awake
Money heartaches are too much for them to take.

A Note From The Gull

Thanks for enlightening me, Mighty Sparrow. I had no idea that the wealthy were on the brink of extinction. Should we be organising a movement for the preservation of this endangered species?

Coming to think of it, the Christ was hinting at this. I remember that account about the rich young man who approached Him and asked Him what he should do to have eternal life. The Christ told him to follow the commandments and since he already did that, all that was left was for him was to sell everything that he had, give it away to the poor and then follow Him. Well, the rich young man realised that he could not part with his worldly goods and he went away a sad man.

Why was he sad, if he had chosen to return to the material things that he loved? That was a clear indication that he knew that he had made the wrong choice. As you say, Mighty Sparrow, the rich have harder choices to make than the rest of us and some of them, the ones who can be honest with themselves, must be as sad as that rich, young man in the Bible. So when my mother used to warn us children about the folly of envying others with her ominous, "You don't know what they have to do to get and to keep what they have", she knew exactly what she was talking about.

But rich men are not alone in this separation from soul liberation. Can we think about the many obstacles that we less wealthy human beings might erect on the path to emancipation that is open to us all?

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Mweh ka allay!
