A Note From The Gull

Thank you,  Prabh Gill and DesiRoutz.

One of my ancestors carried a lucky seed for good fortune. He was a deeply religious man from another continent but in his new homeland, as space was made to accommodate him, he made a space in his spiritual cosmology and in the pocket of his pants for that indigenous good luck charm. Just like it is now blessing you, this land blessed him and he in turn blessed it with the legacy of love that he left behind. The lucky seed gleamed after the years of polishing by his hopeful fingers and the memory of that talisman leaves me to wonder: Was the potency of that seed inherent or had it been imbued with the power of my ancestor's optimism and faith?

Tonight I am feeling that optimism and faith in you and my homeland. As you prepare your schedules and your resolve for the task that awaits you at tomorrow's 2015 General Elections, remember that you, the people of this homeland, are the only ones who can make any real difference. I will not be there to vote and I will not tell you to whom or to what I would choose to give administrative power if I were with you. But let no one lure you into cutting off your votes to spoil your faces by abdicating this duty that awaits you. Those among you who feel that your voices have been trivialized and your will overridden, you especially have nothing to gain from the folly of vote spoiling. Your voting in good conscience may be all that stands between you and a nagging "What if?" that could become even more distressing with the passage of time. Imperfect though the process might be, we should be thankful that we still have the right and privilege to vote. Exercise your franchise.

I will continue to work towards proving to myself, before I can to anyone else, that cursing the harmful is not as effective or empowering as blessing and encouraging the good. If you feel that something is harming your homeland, address it, remove it without hesitation, without rancour, without vindictiveness. Maybe we can also admit that even the harmful has taught us difficult but valuable lessons about ourselves.

Our homeland is a fount of blessings that keeps on giving. Bless it, bless each other, bless The One whose Spirit powers the universe and whose ensign hovers over its namesake - Trikut Pahar, Santísima Trinidad.

Shukar Daateya Tera, Shukar Daateya

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Mweh ka allay!
