A BETTER DAY
By Marcia Miranda
Arranged by Godwin Bowen
Album: Party Monster | Carotte | T&T 1989

You may say that I shouldn't be politically active
You can say that I shouldn't be conscious and take a stand
If my country cries out for more love, all I have I must give
Love of country could turn around any situation.
It's my humble view, in a polyglot society
What we have to do is put aside the "I" and say "We"
With unity in we soul, we can go for gold
Not in sections, but as a whole.

Chorus:
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
The children want a better day
The people want a better day
Leh we make a better day!

So we got to ensure we don't build a Tee-Marie country
With people so sensitive that as you touch them they fold
Closing up all the branches of cooperation so quickly
Leaving out only prickles of prejudice for the world
Stereotypes, of course, are shallow satisfactions for a fool
Like a blinkered horse we sinking in a cold, baseless whirlpool
The people say they want truth to grow more solid roots
Spread their branches and bear good fruit.

Chorus:
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
For the children want a better day
The people want a better day
Leh we make a better day!

So many years ago we fire the colonial master
And we say we finish with overseers and overlords
But if people still living like lanes in a hundred metre
Then somebody could ask just how much we've really matured
'Cause true government shouldn't be a harness or a yoke
When a people bent on putting democracy to work
Colour bias must die, foreign traditions, Bye-bye
With Trinbago identify.

Chorus:
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
And the people say, "Is unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
For the children, make a better day
The people want a better day
Leh we make a better day!

I believe in my land, I have faith in things Trinbagonian
That's the motto every Trinbagonian should now attest
We must not let the cancer of race or a li'l recession
Swallow up the enormous potential that we possess
Consciously let's stand free from all the history and its scars
As a great nation building a new way together
The people don't want to be victims of calamity
But a bridge to posterity.

Chorus:
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
And the people say, "Unity today!"
"Stop your power play, leh we make a better day!"
For the children want a better day
The people want a better day
For the children want a better day
Leh we make a better day!
For the children make a better day
'Cause people want a better day
Leh we make a better day!

Although it is my intention to faithfully transcribe I do not get all the words and I have a knack for hearing the wrong thing. Please feel free to correct me or to fill in the words that I miss by dropping me a message via e-mail. I'd be forever grateful. Thanks in advance!

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Marcia Miranda! No need to look for mythical cities where the streets are paved with gold. I listen to this music and I know that some people have understood what they have in their country. Maybe if the foreign music and the local music with the mind-numbing rhythms and lyrics could be politely asked more often to take a back seat, especially at this point in our history, all the positive music would be unearthed and shared more often. Those who appreciate the beauty of this country are seldom recognised or rewarded as well for singing for their homeland as those who sing for their wallets.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Mweh ka allay!
Guanaguanare
