"Pacification" in Laventille

Reading this story in today's Express "70 arrested in Laventille raids. Gibbs: We're weeding out criminals" I congratulated Commissioner Gibbs and his officers on the fact that they were able to accomplish what they did without anybody getting hurt. It reminded me of another "pacification" process underway in Brazil. However, instead of leaving the troubled communities behind like the Battalion For Special Police Operations (BOPE) would do after responding with punishing shock force to unrest or criminal activity, the Pacifying Police Units (UPP) move in to establish a relationship with the communities and to ensure peace for the beleaguered residents. Below is an Al Jazeera's covering that effort in Brazil. It is worth viewing because we get ideas about how our neighbours in the region are trying to solve problems that we all have in common.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.
