RIVER COME DOWN
By Andre Tanker

River, de river come down
De river come down, woh
De river come down, yeah
River, de river come down
Wind blow like a hurricane
De river come down, yeah.

It wash 'way the right, it wash 'way the wrong
It wash' way the weak, say it wash 'way the strong
Hang on baby, float along
Don't try to fight it [no, no, no]
Don't try to fight it [no, no, no]
If you do, all fall down.

River, de river come down
De river come down, woh
De river come down.

Houses built on strong foundations are the only ones that will stand
Tractors and bulldozers, they climb up on my shoulders,
Like mosquitoes sucking blood from the land
There is a tide of change sweeping past, destruction everywhere
You gotta hold on to the lifeline
Let's hold on together, you and me, have no fear.

River, de river come down
De river come down, woh
De river come down, yeah
River, de river come down
De river come down, woh
De river come down, yeah.

It wash 'way the right, it wash 'way the wrong
It wash 'way the weak, say it wash 'way the strong
Hang on baby, float along
Don't try to fight it [no, no, no]
Don't try to fight it [no, no, no]
If you do, all fall down.

River, de river come down, yeah
De river come down, woh
De river come down
River, yeah, de river come down
Wind blow like a hurricane
De river come down, yeah.

De river come down, De river come down,
De river come down, De river come down,
De river come down, De river come down,

Although it is my intention to faithfully transcribe I do not get all the words and I have a knack for hearing the wrong thing. Please feel free to correct me or to fill in the words that I miss by dropping me a message via e-mail. I'd be forever grateful. Thanks in advance!

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Andre Tanker. All throughout this song I thought of only one thing - my countrymen who died tragically last month in the floods which many of us believe can be linked directly to indiscriminate cutting of the mountainside in Diego Martin. Your words were prophetic.

"Houses built on strong foundations are the only ones that will stand
Tractors and bulldozers, they climb up on my shoulders,
Like mosquitoes sucking blood from the land
There is a tide of change sweeping past, destruction everywhere..."

Definitely an act of man and not of God, unless God is an unscrupulous developer, directs the work of tractors/bulldozers or works in an office that turns a blind eye to squatting in environmentally sensitive areas.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Mweh ka allay!
