OLD TIME DAYS
By Lani. K [Jalani Kojo]
[Bring them back, bring them, bring them back] Bring them!
[Bring them back, bring them, bring them back] Bring them!
[Bring them back] Bring them back! [Bring them, bring them back] Bring them back!
[Bring them back, bring them, bring them back.]
Parents always complaining, they debating, hallucinating
About my generation have nothing good in we.
They say all the fighting, stealing, stabbing, drug dealing
Have them wondering if is we responsible for the rapid crime spree.
Now, I want to tell them something about their duty on this land
Set a great example and in the future your son funeral you wouldn't have to plan
Always quick to say, "My mother woulda hit me one back hand slap." Yes!
If you didn't get away with killing a fly
Why the hell the children stoning down the cat?
Let me tell you 'bout long time Mammy turn 'round
And knock you down for making your face long. You did that?
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back, bring back!
Parents used to walk not talk, eyeing you like hawk,
Stealing wasn't even a thought. You did that?
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
And when you tell them it would cause a lacouray
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
At the end of the day all dem hypocrites go pay
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back!
I say yuh smelling yuhself. Come!
Every day I hear this woman arguing how she daughter running 'bout
Sneaking out in the night with the next door neighbour making she row
Since she get she first blood bath and below the navel the itching start
She doh want to educate the mind
She want a taste of the poison dart he have for the heart.
But I want to say, "The apple don't fall far from the tree." No!
Just take a look at some parents
And you will find out how the child will be
We need to instill morals and values in this nation
If we want to stop the next pregnancy
From destroying the youthful generation.
Let me tell yuh 'bout short shirt going to class
And the parents vex the teachers buss she. You did that.
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
When she start to walk and wine, car man eyeing she down
Next day she's nowhere to be found. You did that.
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
And when you start it go cause an argument
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
Parents, please.................. I ask you please repent
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back, bring back, bring back!
I say yuh smelling yuhself! Come!
I was young and mischievous yet we didn't talk back to mih father
And if he talk to me once or twice is mih cut tail book for later. Yes!
All my tricks and schemes, I rough up, I guff up
I just thought he was being mean
At the end of the day everything was clean - spick and span
It's not a message about you hitting your child,
It's about you taking charge
They got to honour, respect their parents the same
----------------------------------
And as a guardian you have to reassure that to keep the child in check
If not, they will only bring you shame
Spoiling them is a thing you will surely regret.
Let me tell you 'bout homework he say he did in school
And you know he just playing the fool
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back, bring back! Yes!
Check he bag pack and you will face
The same cigarettes you buy last week and you misplace. You did that.
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
Don't talk 'cause they will quick to knock you down
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
Parents --------------- what goes around comes back around
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back!
I say to ketch yuhself!
As a youth growing up, it was hard amongst people
With a different mindset as me
False pride almost take me over but with the age I gain maturity
Parents think I young and stress free,
Don't know what I have to deal with in school
Is the fact that I sing calypso, not dancehall or rap
They think I's a blasted fool
Well, let me start to speak my mind, through calypso our stories are told
Great men as Lion, Kitchener and Sparrow
Brought it forth throughout the entire world.
We need to look at the youngsters like Karene Asche, O'Connor and Chucky
Look what calypso did for them
Bet your bottom dollar, next in line is me.
Let me tell you 'bout Grampa playing kaiso
For the whole neighborhood to hear. He did that.
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back!
And my father did the same, play calypso til it rinse out mih ear. He did that.
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
"Mama Popo" can't get out mih head
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."]
I go sing mih calypso til the day I dead. Huh!
[Lani say, "Bring back the old time days."] Bring back, bring back!
I say yuh smelling yuhself! Come!

A Note From The Gull
Thank you, Jalani Kojo! So far, this is my favourite calypso for the year. Listening to this I have no doubt that calypso's future is in good hands. This is the flowering of young genius.
"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.
Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.
Mweh ka allay!
