A Note From The Gull
Jameer Hosein: "Don't kill one part of a culture for another part." [Part 8, 2:22] Although Jameer is referring to the struggle of the classical forms in the face of the increasingly popular chutney or chutney soca, his comment echoes the concerns of calypsonians and their fans who regret what they see as the demise of traditional calypso. Brother Valentino in his "No Replacements" shares a similar dismay.
Thank you, Peter Manuel, for producing this informative documentary. We take so much for granted, I think precisely because in this wonderfully blessed land and culture we have become jaded by a surfeit of riches. It is only when the well runs dry that we will take stock of the extinctions, those that occurred quietly or with many warning bangs.
"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.
Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.
Mweh ka allay!
