ESTRELLITA DEL SUR [Peruvian Waltz]
Performed by Las Hermanitas Nuñez

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
When being far from you causes my heart pain
I will remember your laughter
The vibration that was a love song, a hymn of peace
Sorrow is forgotten, all will be happiness.

No, no, no, do not say goodbye little southern star
For soon I'll be by your side again
And feeling again the subtle fragrance,
Bells will ring in my heart.

Although it is my intention to faithfully transcribe I do not get all the words and I have a knack for hearing the wrong thing. Please feel free to correct me or to fill in the words that I miss by dropping me a message via e-mail. I'd be forever grateful. Thanks in advance!

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Las Hermanitas Nuñez, for your lovely rendition of "Estrellita Del Sur".

This song is among the Christmas favourites sung by parang groups in Trinidad and Tobago. In my experience performing and listening, the song introduces a welcome change of pace and is welcomed by both the audience and the musicians. Even persons who do not understand the words, find meaning and pleasure in the sweetness of the lilting melody combined with the waltz tempo. This song is actually a Peruvian waltz so there you have it. We even have a little bit of Peru in the parang.

Enjoy yourselves this Christmas, parranderos, and as always, look out for each other.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Mweh ka allay!
