Christmas' Digestifs / New Year's Apéritifs: With God on our Side [Song]

Uploaded by TimeToCastAwayStones

WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE
Composed by Bob Dylan [1963]
Performed live in 1966 by Joan Baez

Oh, my name it is nothing, my age it means less
And the country I come from is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there, the laws to abide
And that the land that I live in has God on its side.

Ah, the history books tell it, they tell it so well
The cavalries charged, the Indians fell
The cavalries charged, the Indians died
Ah, the country was young with God on its side.

The Spanish-American War had its day
And the Civil War too was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes, I was made to memorize
With guns in their hands and God on their side.

Well, the First World War, boys, it came and it went
And the reason for fighting, I never did get
But I learned to accept it, and accept it with pride
For you don’t count the dead when God’s on your side.

And the Second World War, it came to an end
We forgave the Germans and called them our friends
Though they murdered six million, in the ovens they fried
Ah, the Germans now too have God on their side.

Well, I’ve learned to hate Russians all through my whole life
If another war comes, it’s them we must fight
To hate them and fear them, to run and to hide
And accept it all bravely with God on my side.

But now we got weapons of the chemical dust
And if fire them we’re forced to, then fire them we must
One push of the button and a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions when God’s on your side.

For many dark hours, I’ve thought about this
That Jesus Christ was betrayed by a kiss
But I can’t think for you, you’ll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot had God on his side.

And now as I’m leaving, I’m weary as Hell
The confusion I’m feeling, ain’t no tongue can tell
The words fill my head, they fall to the floor
That if God is on our side, He’ll stop the next war.

My Way of Protest. [Song]

MY WAY OF PROTEST
By The Mighty Chalkdust

When postmen see things that they don't like, they either go slow or strike
And when some people hate the government, they leave for a next continent
And when some people cannot get employment - G.C.E. boys scrunting on the pavement
For that, some of you might curse and get vex too, but listen to what I does do:
When things ent right, I does feel uptight
I does feel to curse, sometimes I does feel to fight
But every man in life today will show anger in his own way
So Panday will walk out from the House and Robbie will say, "No justice, you louse!"
When I'm vex, well, I cannot go and cuff Eric in his eye
So instead, I does simply cry, "Juba Doo Bai!"

You see why I cry, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]?

There are many ills in this country that make most of us angry
Like when government close George the Fifth Park, or T&TEC leave us in the dark
And when the police up to Gonzales went and put poor people things on the pavement
And City Council getting the Drag Brothers vexed, a madman and all will get vex.
That can't be right, you must feel uptight
You might feel to fight, or shoot someone on sight
But not me, I does think before I ever go and break the law
So when Basil Pitt lost his seat and yet they made him Minister complete
I'd like to tell Basil to try and kiss my upper thigh
But I does cool down and cry, ["Juba Doo Bai!"]

You see why I cry, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]?

Oh, citizens are out in the rain, they have nowhere to complain
They have no cash to file an injunction, they haven't an Ombudsman
And that is why some boys became guerrillas, or turn to mutiny like them soldiers
Or use violence and end up being charged, or cuss the judge like Ramesh Maharaj - Not me!
I try to win doing my own thing,
I used to 'fraid Karl but now I 'fraid Selwyn
So when they ban "Tourist Leggo", no road march for that calypso
I must get vex with CDC for they destroying Caribbean unity
I'd like to take the CDC to Shadow to buss up dey toe
But I 'fraid Shadow dig out their eye, so, ["Juba Doo Bai!"]

You see why I cry, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]?

Juba Doo Bai is there for a stand against human oppression
It's a cry against foreign domination, we want a free land without corruption
That's why I am vexed when from the Treasury here, a hundred thousand dollars disappear
And Selwyn holding people like he mad, while the real thieves in his backyard.
Selwyn, wey you do? I vex till I blue.
You mean you can't see that the Doc using you?
The people you should hold and try, to them you turning a blind eye
Hold the police officer who they say was working right here for the CIA
Since you half blind, next time we meet, I'll say, "Selwyn, you cokey eye."
But my friends, I am too shy, so, ["Juba Doo Bai!"]

That's the meaning of ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
So my friends, whenever you hear that cry ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
That's to pull them folks from their places high ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
To eradicate them European ties ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
To protect and defend our rights, I cry, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
Mister, take off that old British tie, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
When I want to curse in my own style, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
No four letter words for me, not this guy! ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
Tubal Uriah Butler, wherever you lie, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]
To your memory I dedicate this cry, ["Juba, Juba Doo Bai!"]

COUNTRY BLEEDING
By The Enginear

Spoken: Somebody build it! So much going on in this country right now. Just had to say this

I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings.

I feel mih country bleeding, the heart is Port of Spain
Now tell me wais the reason they clogging up we veins
State of Emergency, we hadda stop the rain
Or pray for better weather, may we never get a hurricane.

Ah hottin up mih head, ah hottin up mih brain
Cuz it go flood again and it go flood again
We try to numb the pain by drinking rum in vain
Puncheon at the system while the Forres Park is up in flames.

And now the trees gone, the soil go run away
And all dis muddy water, it cyah go down the drain
And plus it fill ah litter, nobody cannot force it
It gushing like a faucet, nobody cannot cross it.

I probably mighta loss it, I had to speak mih mind
And speak about de real emergency, is like we seeing blind
I hope you see my feelings, I hope you see the signs
I feel mih country bleeding, I had to bleed these lines.

I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings.

I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings.

We state is very sorry, I think that we should start
To think of everybody like we were body parts
Cuz we are Trinidad, they tryna stop we heart
On the gurney for surgery in a State of Emergency.

It's time for urgency, start rising up like yeast
From the bottom of society cuz they are like our feet
So much tragedy in Laventy - the belly of the beast
I feel a sharp pain stabbing me 'til they get to eat.

Watch what they feedin yuh, especially the media
It come up from yuh stomach, just a product of bulimia
I hope we not too late for this like FEMA in Katrina
But we doh know what time it is, no dial in Arima.

We ha no time for sure, our vital signs are poor
So what we fighting for, is time to find a cure
Doh need no pills, friend, diseases will end
If all you children be the immune system.

I'z not the best emcee but allyuh'ze real misuse
The music industry to talk on real issues
I feel mih country bleeding red from tissues
Assassination plots is like the blood clots

As the nation drops to its knees for an answer
Put our hands up like please cure the cancer
We doh wanna live with disease and disaster
We just wanna live at peace with the master.

Everyday instead we searching for that daily bread
Even if it means that I'm aiming at yuh head
The country real sick, we go play this 'til we dead
And the police is dey way of sayin' come and take yuh meds.

But dey doh cure nuttin, forget dey medication
Dey doh cure nuttin, forget dey operations
Cuz if we’re one body, the heads of our nation
Would really come together, call it mental meditation.

I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings
I feel mih country bleeding, now tell me wha is the reason
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings
If you doh really feel it, then you ain't have no feelings...

Odorous Woman

By Silverado

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. The name of my song is "Odorous Woman." Now it's not a woman bashing song. It's about one particular woman who, my Prime Minister say, going to come before the end of the year so I trust and hope that you all listen to it and come together at the end of the song and we could stop her from coming. OK? OK?

My name is Trinidad, I have real money to spend
And when you have money, yuh doesn't want it to end
So I seek some advice on how I should invest
So when years to come, I will earn some interest
I learn of this sweet woman, she name is Alice Co
The government advised me she is the way to go
Some of my concerned friends tell me she come straight from hell
Dey say to look out for she tricks and block mih nose from she smell
I forget all of my friends, went ahead and make a deal
I thought about my future and having a hearty meal
For the next thirty years, I drink from she cup
All of a sudden, she smell start stinking up.

When I look at my skin, rust spreading like margarine
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
Hair dropping off mih head, most ah mih brain cells dead
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
My wife had a baby, it come out deform
Chronic diseases, this became the norm
Any minute now, I could die!
Oh my god! A worm eating out mih eye
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I could die! Because I smelt-her
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I have lost all my pride because I smelt-her

Now, I doh know why I was so harden at all for you know. Ah should ah follow mih partners and dem but no! She look good nah. Ah leh she come down here and do what she want, yuh understand? Hardenness! Ah look fuh it boy! Oh god! Allyuh listen to this eh?

She wanted to go Brazil, claiming she is the best
Some men hear she coming and dey start to protest
She try Venezuela, she even try to go Chile
With public consultation, dey get de rid ah she
One ting have me baffle, I can't understand
She livin in de US and dey never take up she plan
When she was in Australia, a shocking reality,
The closest human being was 500 miles from she
I thought that the smell was the only ting outta place
Wasn't until she kill me with toxic waste
I should have thought of myself, my friends and family
But I play dictator manning the affairs of my country.

When I look at my skin rust spreading like margarine
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
Hair dropping off mih head , most ah mih brain cells dead
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
My wife had a baby, it come out deform
Chronic diseases, it became the norm
Any minute now, I could die!
Oh my god! A worm eating out mih eye...Why?
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I could die! Because I smelt-her
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I have lost all my pride because I smelt-her.

Leh me tell allyuh something. Is not I alone dying you know, is allyuh go die too. Allyuh children children and children to come too, de whole country go just get wipe out . You see me right now I real sick and I going and meet my maker. God forgive me of all my sins... Oh god ah dying eh!... Oh god, help mih!

I felt so sad for what I did, my world come to an end
Dem people who advised me, dem cyah be my friend
When she start stinking up, I was all alone
All of my government friends leave de country and dey gone
I know that god will take me to task
When I breathe in air, I now have to use a mask
She mash down plenty houses to make room for she to pass
She waste my resources, she use all ah mih natural gas
Too late, too late, too late! was my final cry
The damage is done, she hop a plane and she fly
Forever I, Trinidad will never be the same
Forever on my conscience, I am the one to blame.

When I look at my skin, rust spreading like margarine
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
Hair dripping off mih head , most ah mih brain cells dead
All ah dis happen because I smelt-her
My wife had a baby, it come out deform
Chronic diseases, this became the norm
Any minute now, I could die!
Oh my god! A worm eating out mih eye
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I could die! Because I smelt-her
Because I smelt-her, because I smelt-her
I have lost all my pride because I smelt-her.
