Dove and Pigeon [Song]

DOVE AND PIGEON
By Lord Nelson

Dove and Pigeon were two good companions
I say, Dove and Pigeon were two good companions
But because of jealousy they both start to disagree
So Pigeon call a contest to prove to Dove that he is best.

I didn't have to figure, I knew Dove was smarter
Pigeon sure he had Dove covered
So he decide they would eat some pepper
He say, "One thing you must remember.
Eat all you want, don't ask for water."
Dove smile and said, "Agree."
And they both flew on the pepper tree.

Dove start to sing:
"Coo coo coo-coo bansimande
Netty yetty bansimande, wayo wayo bansimande
You mustn't say, 'eeshhhha', you mustn't say, 'eeshhhha'
And nobody shouldn't say, 'eeshhhha, eeshhhha, eeshhhha'."

This time Dove eating and singing,
Bouncing, flapping his wing
Pigeon sure how he winning,
Eating like a champ, won't say a thing
Then all the birds gather 'round to see what was going on
Still Pigeon kept up the pace,
Confident he go win the race.

Singing:
"Coo coo coo-coo bansimande
Netty yetty bansimande, wayo wayo bansimande
You mustn't say, 'eeshhhha', you mustn't say, 'eeshhhha'
And nobody shouldn't say, 'eeshhhha, eeshhhha, eeshhhha'."

Friends, I know you won't believe me
But Sparrow was there, if I lie just ask he
When the pepper start to burn Pigeon
He spin round twice, Bip! he fall down
Dove start to jump up with glee up and down the pepper tree
He said, "Now take a tip from me.
Our friendship done because of jealousy."

Still singing;
"Coo coo coo-coo bansimande
Netty yetty bansimande, wayo wayo bansimande
You mustn't say, 'eeshhhha', you mustn't say, 'eeshhhha'
And nobody shouldn't say, 'eeshhhha, eeshhhha, eeshhhha'."

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Lord Nelson. Sweet and simple from a time long past, "a tone which is now forever fled."

Time it was
And what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences.

Long ago it must be
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They're all that's left you.

Brother Obama
We don’t need the empire to give us anything. Our efforts will be legal and peaceful, because our commitment is to peace and fraternity among all human beings who live on this planet.
Author: Fidel Castro Ruz | internet@granma.cu

"The kings of Spain brought us the conquistadores and masters, whose footprints remained in the circular land grants assigned to those searching for gold in the sands of rivers, an abusive and shameful form of exploitation, traces of which can be noted from the air in many places around the country.

"Tourism today, in large part, consists of viewing the delights of our landscapes and tasting exquisite delicacies from our seas, and is always shared with the private capital of large foreign corporations, whose earnings, if they don’t reach billions of dollars, are not worthy of any attention whatsoever.

"Since I find myself obliged to mention the issue, I must add - principally for the youth - that few people are aware of the importance of such a condition, in this singular moment of human history. I would not say that time has been lost, but I do not hesitate to affirm that we are not adequately informed, not you, nor us, of the knowledge and conscience that we must have to confront the realities which challenge us. The first to be taken into consideration is that our lives are but a fraction of a historical second, which must also be devoted in part to the vital necessities of every human being. One of the characteristics of this condition is the tendency to overvalue its role, in contrast, on the other hand, with the extraordinary number of persons who embody the loftiest dreams.

"Nevertheless, no one is good or bad entirely on their own. None of us is designed for the role we must assume in a revolutionary society, although Cubans had the privilege of José Martí’s example. I even ask myself if he needed to die or not in Dos Ríos, when he said, “For me, it’s time,” and charged the Spanish forces entrenched in a solid line of firepower. He did not want to return to the United States, and there was no one who could make him. Someone ripped some pages from his diary. Who bears this treacherous responsibility, undoubtedly the work of an unscrupulous conspirator? Differences between the leaders were well known, but never indiscipline. “Whoever attempts to appropriate Cuba will reap only the dust of its soil drenched in blood, if he does not perish in the struggle,” stated the glorious Black leader Antonio Maceo. Máximo Gómez is likewise recognized as the most disciplined and discreet military chief in our history.

"Looking at it from another angle, how can we not admire the indignation of Bonifacio Byrne when, from a distant boat returning him to Cuba, he saw another flag alongside that of the single star and declared, “My flag is that which has never been mercenary...” immediately adding one of the most beautiful phrases I have ever heard, “If it is torn to shreds, it will be my flag one day… our dead raising their arms will still be able to defend it!” Nor will I forget the blistering words of Camilo Cienfuegos that night, when, just some tens of meters away, bazookas and machine guns of U.S. origin in the hands of counterrevolutionaries were pointed toward that terrace on which we stood.

"Obama was born in August of 1961, as he himself explained. More than half a century has transpired since that time.

"Let us see, however, how our illustrious guest thinks today:

I have come here to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas. I have come here to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people,” followed by a deluge of concepts entirely novel for the majority of us:

We both live in a new world, colonized by Europeans,” the U.S. President continued, “Cuba, like the United States, was built in part by slaves brought here from Africa. Like the United States, the Cuban people can trace their heritage to both slaves and slave-owners.”

"The native populations don’t exist at all in Obama’s mind. Nor does he say that the Revolution swept away racial discrimination, or that pensions and salaries for all Cubans were decreed by it before Mr. Barack Obama was 10 years old. The hateful, racist bourgeois custom of hiring strongmen to expel Black citizens from recreational centers was swept away by the Cuban Revolution - that which would go down in history for the battle against apartheid that liberated Angola, putting an end to the presence of nuclear weapons on a continent of more than a billion inhabitants. This was not the objective of our solidarity, but rather to help the peoples of Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and others under the fascist colonial domination of Portugal.

"In 1961, just one year and three months after the triumph of the Revolution, a mercenary force with armored artillery and infantry, backed by aircraft, trained and accompanied by U.S. warships and aircraft carriers, attacked our country by surprise. Nothing can justify that perfidious attack which cost our country hundreds of losses, including deaths and injuries

"As for the pro-yankee assault brigade, no evidence exists anywhere that it was possible to evacuate a single mercenary. Yankee combat planes were presented before the United Nations as the equipment of a Cuban uprising.

"The military experience and power of this country is very well known. In Africa, they likewise believed that revolutionary Cuba would be easily taken out of the fight. The invasion via southern Angola by racist South African motorized brigades got close to Luanda, the capital in the eastern part of the country. There a struggle began which went on for no less than 15 years. I wouldn’t even talk about this, if I didn’t have the elemental duty to respond to Obama’s speech in Havana’s Alicia Alonso Grand Theater.

"Nor will I attempt to give details, only emphasize that an honorable chapter in the struggle for human liberation was written there. In a certain way, I hoped Obama’s behavior would be correct. His humble origin and natural intelligence were evident. Mandela was imprisoned for life and had become a giant in the struggle for human dignity. One day, a copy of a book narrating part of Mandela’s life reached my hands, and - surprise! - the prologue was by Barack Obama. I rapidly skimmed the pages. The miniscule size of Mandela’s handwriting noting facts was incredible. Knowing men such as him was worthwhile.

"Regarding the episode in South Africa I must point out another experience. I was really interested in learning more about how the South Africans had acquired nuclear weapons. I only had very precise information that there were no more than 10 or 12 bombs. A reliable source was the professor and researcher Piero Gleijeses, who had written the text Conflicting Missions: Havana, Washington, and Africa, 1959-1976, an excellent piece. I knew he was the most reliable source on what had happened and I told him so; he responded that he had not spoken more about the matter as in the text he had responded to questions from compañero Jorge Risquet, who had been Cuban ambassador and collaborator in Angola, a very good friend of his. I located Risquet; already undertaking other important tasks he was finishing a course which would last several weeks longer. That task coincided with a fairly recent visit by Piero to our country; I had warned him that Risquet was getting on and his health was not great. A few days later what I had feared occurred. Risquet deteriorated and died. When Piero arrived there was nothing to do except make promises, but I had already received information related to the weapons and the assistance that racist South Africa had received from Reagan and Israel.

"I do not know what Obama would have to say about this story now. I am unaware as to what he did or did not know, although it is very unlikely that he knew absolutely nothing. My modest suggestion is that he gives it thought and does not attempt now to elaborate theories on Cuban policy.

"There is an important issue:

"Obama made a speech in which he uses the most sweetened words to express: “It is time, now, to forget the past, leave the past behind, let us look to the future together, a future of hope. And it won’t be easy, there will be challenges and we must give it time; but my stay here gives me more hope in what we can do together as friends, as family, as neighbors, together.”

"I suppose all of us were at risk of a heart attack upon hearing these words from the President of the United States. After a ruthless blockade that has lasted almost 60 years, and what about those who have died in the mercenary attacks on Cuban ships and ports, an airliner full of passengers blown up in midair, mercenary invasions, multiple acts of violence and coercion?

Nobody should be under the illusion that the people of this dignified and selfless country will renounce the glory, the rights, or the spiritual wealth they have gained with the development of education, science and culture.

"I also warn that we are capable of producing the food and material riches we need with the efforts and intelligence of our people. We do not need the empire to give us anything. Our efforts will be legal and peaceful, as this is our commitment to peace and fraternity among all human beings who live on this planet."

Glorious Saturday Meditation II: Redemption Day [Song]

Uploaded by TheBlankBullets6

REDEMPTION DAY
Performed by Johnny Cash

I've wept for those who suffer long
But how I weep for those who've gone
In rooms of grief and questioned wrong
But keep on killing.

It's in the soul to feel such things
But weak to watch without speaking
Oh, what mercy sadness brings
If God be willing.

There is a train that's heading straight
To Heaven's gate, to Heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For Redemption Day.

Fire rages in the streets
And swallows everything it meets
It's just an image often seen on television
Come leaders, come ye men of great
Let us hear you pontificate
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we aren't listening.

There is a train that's heading straight
To Heaven's gate, to Heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For Redemption Day.

What do you have for us today?
Throw us a bone but save the plate
Oh why we waited 'til so late
Was there no oil to excavate
No riches in trade for the fate
Of every person who died in hate
Throw us a bone, you men of great.

There is a train that's heading straight
To Heaven's gate, to Heaven's gate
And on the way, child and man,
And woman wait, watch and wait
For Redemption Day.

It's buried in the countryside
Exploding in the shells at night
It's everywhere a baby cries
Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

Glorious Saturday Meditation I: Here In Between [Song]

HERE IN BETWEEN
Sung by Brian Moss
Composed by Brian Moss

Here in between the death and life
Of broken God and risen Christ
We watch and wait, we kneel and pray
For hope to breathe at break of day
The temple torn by sacrifice
How can this be the way?

The Son of God nailed to a tree
This is not how we thought it'd be
Your condemnation makes no sense
An act of hate and violence
We broke the bread, we spilled the wine
How can this be the way?

Within this day of Sabbath rest-
A gift to those whom You have blessed-
Your peace transforms our hearts content
In this already and not yet
In stillness beats the drum of life
How can this be the way?

Your never-ending sovereignty
Still flickers with eternity
It brightens fading eventide
The gospel hums of mercy wide
Oh Lord of Life, open Your eyes
You are the only
You are the only
You are the only way.

Good Friday Meditation: Behold The Wood Of The Cross [Hymn]

Uploaded by DollyHot

BEHOLD THE WOOD OF THE CROSS
By Dan Schutte

Behold, behold, the wood of the cross,
On which is hung our salvation.
O come, let us adore.

Unless a grain of wheat shall fall upon the ground and die
It shall remain but a single grain, and not give life.

Behold, behold, the wood of the cross,
On which is hung our salvation.
O come, let us adore.

"And when My hour of glory comes, as all was meant to be
You shall see Me lifted up upon a tree
."

Behold, behold, the wood of the cross,
On which is hung our salvation.
O come, let us adore.

Holy Thursday Meditation: Gethsemane [Hymn]

Gethsemane | Uploaded bySally DeFord

GETHSEMANE
By James Loynes
Composed by Sally DeFord

Gethsemane lay still and dark
Creation watched in silent awe
As Jesus suffered His Father’s will
To satisfy unyielding law.

He knelt in earnest prayer alone
His friends, overcome with sorrow, slept
Beneath the burden of grief He groaned
Beneath the weight of sin He wept.

And with His blood so freely spent
He bought my soul; He paid my debt
What work of love was wrought for me
In the stillness of Gethsemane.

This bitter cup wilt Thou remove?
Yet not my will, but Thine be done.”
Behold His anguish and weep anew
For love of Christ, the sinless One.

With His wounds my own are healed
My every pain overcome in His
My shame, my weakness, my grief untold
Find ransom in His priceless gift.

For with His blood so freely spent
He bought my soul; He paid my debt
What work of love was wrought for me
In the stillness of Gethsemane
In the stillness of Gethsemane.

Rough translation
"This is the story of a girl, restless in thought, who wants to take the road less traveled. A girl who refuses to let her feet touch the ground and desires independence from the path that was chosen for her. She packs her belongings and wants to fly, away from her constraints and bonds. She wants to let her thoughts fly with her through a path like the one a kite takes in the wind. On her journey, she sees the world shimmering with color and all things living, dancing and singing to the tune of freedom." Translation source.

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Shankar Tucker, Vidya Vandana, Raashi Kulkarni and Viral Brahmbhatt.

This is the world we have been given. The calamities occur and will continue to occur. If we remember that there is a purpose in our moving forward, and even better that the movement is an ascent, then we cannot allow the bad to detain us. Shoot colours instead of bullets. Live!

The Society for the Confluence of Festivals in India provided this very interesting description of the significance of Holi or Phagwa.
"Significance of Holi
In spite of being such a colourful and gay festival, there are various aspects of Holi which makes it so significant for our lives. Though they might not be so apparent but a closer look and a little thought will reveal the significance of Holi in more ways than meets the eyes. Ranging from socio-cultural, religious to biological there is every reason why we must heartily enjoy the festival and cherish the reasons for its celebrations.

So when, its time for Holi, please don't hold yourself back and enjoy the festival to the hilt by participating with full enthusiasm in every small tradition related to the festival.

Mythological Significance
Holi gets us close to our religion and our mythology as it is essentially the celebration of various legends associated with the festival.

Foremost is the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap. The legend says there once lived a devil and powerful king, Hiranyakshyap who considered himself a god and wanted everybody to worship him. To his great ire, his son, Prahlad began to worship, Lord Vishnu. To get rid of his son, Hiranyakshyap asked his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap, as she had a boon to enter fire unscathed. Legend has it that Prahlad was saved for his extreme devotion for the lord while Holika paid a price for her sinister desire. The tradition of burning Holika or the 'Holika dahan' comes mainly from this legend.

Holi also celebrates the legend of Radha and Krishna which describes the extreme delight, Krishna took in applying colour on Radha and other gopis. This prank of Krishna later, became a trend and a part of the Holi festivities.
Mythology also states that Holi is the celebration of death of Ogress Pootana who tried to kill infant, Krishna by feeding poisonous milk to it.

Another legend of Holi which is extremely popular in Southern India is that of Lord Shiva and Kaamadeva. According to the legend, people in south celebrate the sacrifice of Lord of Passion Kaamadeva who risked his life to revoke Lord Shiva from meditation and save the world.

Also, popular is the legend of Ogress Dhundhi who used to trouble children in the kingdom of Raghu and was ultimately chased away by the pranks of the children on the day of Holi. Showing their belief in the legend, children till date play pranks and hurl abuses at the time of Holika Dahan.

Cultural Significance
Celebration of the various legends associated with Holi reassure the people of the power of the truth as the moral of all these legends is the ultimate victory of good over evil. The legend of Hiranyakashyap and Prahlad also points to the fact that extreme devotion to god pays as god always takes his true devotee in his shelter.

All these legends help the people to follow a good conduct in their lives and believe in the virtue of being truthful. This is extremely important in the modern day society when so many people resort to evil practices for small gains and torture one who is honest. Holi helps the people to believe in the virtue of being truthful and honest and also to fight away the evil.

Besides, holi is celebrated at a time of the year when the fields are in full bloom and people are expecting a good harvest. This gives a people a good reason to rejoice, make merry and submerge themselves in the spirit of Holi.

Social Significance
Holi helps to bring the society together and strengthen the secular fabric of our country. For, the festival is celebrated by non-Hindus also as everybody like to be a part of such a colouful and joyous festival.

Also, the tradition of the Holi is that even the enemies turn friends on Holi and forget any feeling of hardship that may be present. Besides, on this day people do not differentiate between the rich and poor and everybody celebrate the festival together with a spirit of bonhomie and brotherhood.

In the evening people visit friends and relatives and exchange gifts, sweets and greetings. This helps in revatalising relationships and strengthening emotional bonds between people.

Biological Significance
It is interesting to note that the festival of Holi is significant for our lives and body in many other ways than providing joy and fun.

We also need to thank our forefathers who started the trend of celebrating Holi at such a scientifically accurate time. And, also for incorporating so much fun in the festival.

Significance of Holi As Holi comes at a time of the year when people have a tendency to feel sleepy and lazy. This is natural for the body to experiences some tardiness due to the change from the cold to the heat in the atmosphere. To counteract this tardiness of the body, people sing loudly or even speak loudly. Their movements are brisk and their music is loud. All of this helps to rejuvenate the system of the human body.

Besides, the colours when sprayed on the body have a great impact on it. Biologists believe the liquid dye or Abeer penetrates the body and enters into the pores. It has the effect of strengthening the ions in the body and adds health and beauty to it.

There is yet another scientific reason for celebrating the Holi, this however pertains to the tradition of Holika Dahan. The mutation period of winter and spring, induces the growth of bacteria in the atmosphere as well as in the body. When Holika is burnt, temperature rises to about 145 degrees Fahrenhiet. Following the tradition when people perform Parikrima (circumambulation or going around) around the fire, the heat from the fire kills the bacteria in the body thus, cleansing it."

The way Holi is celebrated in south, the festival also promotes good health. For, the day after the burning of Holika people put ash (Vibhuti) on their forehead and they would mix Chandan (sandalpaste) with the young leaves and flowers of the Mango tree and consume it to promote good health.

Some also believe that play with colours help to promote good health as colours are said to have great impact on our body and our health. Western-Physicians and doctors believe that for a healthy body, colours too have an important place besides the other vital elements. Deficiency of a particular colour in our body causes ailment, which can be cured only after supplementing the body with that particular colour.

People also clean-up their houses on Holi which helps in clearing up the dust and mess in the house and get rid of mosquitoes and others pests. A clean house generally makes the residents feel good and generate positive energies. SOURCE

The Revolution Leaves the Shark Cage: President Raúl Castro's Speech

The first US President in Cuba in eighty-eight years, President Obama met with Cuban President Raúl Castro in Havana, Cuba, Monday 26th March, 2016, where the two held a joint press conference.

Excerpted from Time:
"CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): Mr. President Barack Obama, we are pleased to welcome you on this, the first visit of a president of the United States of America to our country in 88 years.

"We have observed that in the 15 months that have passed since the decision was made to establish our diplomatic relations, we have obtained concrete results. We were able to resume direct postal exchanges and we signed an agreement to resume commercial flights.

"CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): We have signed two memorandums of understanding on the protection of the environment and maritime areas, and another one to secure the safety of sea navigation. Today, another one will be signed on cooperation of the area of agriculture. At the moment, another set of bilateral instruments are being negotiated to cooperate in such areas as counter narcotics, the safety of commerce, and travelers and health. About this last issue, we have agreed to deepen our cooperation in the prevention and treatment of transmissible diseases, such as Zika, and non-transmissible chronic diseases, cancer included.

"This cooperation is beneficial not only for Cuba and the United States, but also for our hemisphere at large. Following the decisions made by President Obama to modify the application of some aspects of the blockade, Cuban enterprises and their American counterparts are working to identify possible commercial operations that could materialize in the still restrictive framework of existing regulations.

"The fact is that some have already materialized, especially in the area of telecommunications — an area in which our country already has a program designed on the basis of its priorities and the necessary technological sovereignty, one that can secure the appropriate (ph) views and the service of national interests.

"Progress has also been made toward the acquisition of medicines, medical materiel and equipment for power generation and environmental protection, these among others. Much more could be done if the blockade were lifted.

"We recognize the position of President Obama and his administration against the blockade, and his repeated appeals to Congress to have it removed. The most recent measures adopted by his administration are positive but insufficient. I had the opportunity to discuss with the president other steps that we think could be taken in order to remove restrictions that remain in force, and make a significant contribution to the debunking of the blockade.

"This is essential, because the blockade remains in force and because it contains discouraging elements and intimidating effects and extra-territorial outreach.

"I put forward to the president some examples on this, showing their negative consequences for both Cuba and other countries. The blockade stands as the most important obstacle to our economic development and the wellbeing of the Cuba people. That’s why its removal will be of the essence to normalize bilateral relations. And actually, it will also bring benefits to the Cuban emigrants who wish the best for their families and their country.

"In order to move forward towards normalization, it will also be necessary to return the territory illegally occupied by Guantanamo Naval Base. Since they stand as the two main obstacles, these issues were again dealt with in the editorial ran on March 9 by the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba.

"CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): And again, only four days ago, in the press conference offered by our Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, those pieces extensively reported by the media.

"Other policies should also be abolished for normal relations to develop between the United States and Cuba. No one should intend to have the Cuban people renounce the destiny it chose in freedom and sovereignty, the same for which you have made enormous sacrifices.

"We also discussed international issues, particularly those that could have an impact on regional peace and stability. We had thought to discuss other issues, but we did not have enough time. I had planned to raise our concern over the destabilization some are trying to promote in Venezuela, something which we consider to be counterproductive to the overall situation in the continent. I did not have the chance to raise with him, I’m raising it here.

"Likewise, we talked about the ongoing peace process in Colombia and the effort to put an end to that conflict. There are profound differences between our countries that will not go away. Since we hold different concepts on many subjects such as political systems, democracy, the exercise of human rights, social justice, international relations and world peace and stability.

"We defend human rights. In our view, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights are indivisible, interdependent and universal. Actually, we find it inconceivable that a government does not defend and insure the right to health care, education, Social Security with provision and development, equal pay and the rights of children. We oppose political manipulation and double standards in the approach to human rights.

"Cuba has much to say and show on this issue. That is why I have reiterated to the president our willingness to continue moving forward with the dialogue on this matter that was already initiated.

"On December 17th, 2014, as we announced the decision to re- establish diplomatic relations, I said that we should learn the art of co-existing with our difference in a civilized manner. In my remarks to Parliament on July 15, 2015, I said changing everything that needs to be changed is the sovereign and exclusive concern of Cubans. The revolutionary government is willing to advance to a normalization of relations, for it is convinced that both countries can co-exist and cooperate in a civilized manner and for the mutual benefit regardless of existing and future differences and thus contribute to peace, security, stability, development and equity in our continent and around the world.

"CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): Today, I reaffirm that we should exercise the art of civilized co-existence, which involves accepting and respecting differences and preventing these from becoming the center of our relationship.

"We should instead promote links that can benefit both our countries and peoples while focusing on those things that bring us closer and not on those that pull us apart. We agree that a long and complex path still lies ahead. But what is most important is that we have started taking the first steps to build a new type of relationship, one that has never existed between Cuba and the United States.

"Actually, destroying a bridge can be an easy and quick undertaking. However, its solid reconstruction can prove a lengthy and challenging endeavor. After four failed attempts and giving proof of the will and perseverance, on September 2, 2013, American swimmer Diane Nyad managed to cross the Florida Strait swimming without an anti-shark cage to protect her.

"To that exploit of conquering the geographical differences between our two countries. It was for that exploit that on August 30th, 2013, as the national anthems of Cuba and the United States were played she was presented with the Order of Sport Merit, a declaration awarded by the State Counsel. Such feat carries a powerful message.

"One that should serve as an example to honor bilateral relations. For it confirms that if she could do it, then we can do it too. President Obama, I reiterate our appreciation for his visit and the willingness of the government of Cuba to continue moving forward in the well being of our countries. Thank you very much. SOURCE
Anxious not to maximise the positives of the moment or to miss the particularly golden opportunity to etch their country's humanitarian bent and sterling moral position into the annals, reporters Jim Acosta of CNN and Andrea Mitchell of NBC posed their predictable questions. Part of Andrea Mitchell's question was:

"What is the future of our two countries, given the different definitions and the different interpretations of profound issues like democracy and human rights?

Graciously, President Obama went to bat and then it was President Raúl Castro's turn. To me, his impatience was obvious, or maybe the impatience was really all mine, but here was his answer about human rights:
"CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): ....Well, Andrea. I was reading here something I think about human rights, but I’m going to make the question to you now. There are 41 — there are 61 international instruments to recognize how many countries in the world comply with all the human rights and civil rights that have been included in these 61 instruments.

CASTRO (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): What country complies with them all? Do you know how many? I do. None. None whatsoever. Some countries comply some rights, other comply others. And we are among these countries. Out of these 61 instruments, Cuba has complied with 47 of these human rights instruments.

There are countries that may comply with more, those that comply with less. I think human rights issues should not be politicized. That is not correct. If that is a purpose, then we will stay the same way. Like, for example — for Cuba that does not fulfill all the rights.

Do you think there is any other — more sacred right than the right to help so that billions of children don’t die just for the lack of a vaccine or a drug or a medicament. For example, do you agree with the right to free education for all those born anywhere in the world or in any country? I think many countries don’t think this is a human right.

In Cuba, all children are born in a hospital and they are registered that same day because when mothers are in advanced pregnancy, they are — they go to hospitals days before, many days before delivery, so that all children are born in hospitals. It doesn’t matter if they live in faraway places or in mountains or hills.

We have many other rights — a right to health, the right to education. Do you — and this is my last example that I will mention. Do you think that for equal work, men get better pay than women just for the fact of being women? Well in Cuba, women get same pay for same work. I can give you many, many examples, so I don’t think we cannot use the argument of human rights for political confrontation. That is not fair. It’s not correct.

I’m not saying that is not honest, it’s part of confrontations, of course. But let us work so that we can all comply with all human rights." SOURCE
Back in the USA, where financial/military/prison/medical/race/academic/energy- industrial complexes are eating their own, where presidential candidates appear to be competing with each other to expose a festering economic and social morass so punishing to the vulnerable, that many Americans are no longer as prone to combusting at the mere mention of the words socialism and revolution, but instead its young people are giving the socialist, Bernie Sanders their rapt attention and support.

Here is Bernie Sanders in his interview last night with Anderson Cooper of CNN. Whether or not he is successful, as an American who dares to reveal that he is capable of self-reflection, he stands among those who increase my hope for his country and the rest of the world.

How people decide to live life is completely up to them, so best wishes to the people of Cuba. I have no reason to believe that in their hearts and in the struggle and their efforts to protect the revolution, their leaders have not always wanted the best for their people, so I also believe that these changes today are not a departure from that, but reflective of their continuing concern for the country's welfare. The seeds have been sown, and even if the change renders them unrecognisable, even to themselves, I know that a memory, a heritage, a word of respect and gratitude and a salute will remain. Perhaps that is the only victory that can ever be hoped for or won by individuals and nations alike. With very little this country has achieved marvels which detractors will continue to deliberately ignore or reluctantly acknowledge. To all the people of Cuba - ¡Que Dios los acompañe! May their minds, their spirits and their hands remain their own.

Remember [Song]

REMEMBER
By Lord Creator

The clothes you wear and the food you eat
Man, how life was going sweet
You went to school and you learn a lot
Since you was a tiny tot
So please, do not forget
I say, how all these things you come to get
Since you was in your cradle
Your mother and your father was responsible.

Remember when you couldn't even walk?
Remember when you couldn't even talk?
I say, remember who, who used to wash your clothes for you
Who used to wipe your nose for you
Who used to hug and kiss you
I say, remember who, who used to change your diaper
Who used to find your supper
Don't forget was your mother and father.

Remember when things was going fine
With not a worry on your mind
And when things wasn't so good with you
Was the first ones you would run to
So how could you forget
And up to now, you can't pay back yet
Try from now 'til forever
You could never pay back your mother and father.

It have some fathers ent good at all
They never mind you when you were small
But never mind how your father bad
You shouldn't take it on too hard
Try to understand what would be your position
If  wasn't for your Daddy
You would never, never have a dear Mummy.

Oh-oh, oh yeah, alright, yes sir...

Heal our Land [Song]

Uploaded by Revelation Red

HEAL OUR LAND
By Revelation

A mechanical generation living off a sensation
Living for the high, we rather die than try The Most High Jesus.
Well, you better cry because I've cried, we've cried, they've cried, the street cries
The levees are broken, hearts are broken, I don't need no token
The truth is free, Revelation has spoken
Out of deep sleep we have woken, changing from our wicked ways to a new slogan.

Why do we steal and cheat and murmur, yes, we lie
Giving Satan victory over our lives
Jesus' love is spread all over, that's one thing it can't deny.
Oh why?

Father, forgive us for we know not what we do.
Father, Father, Father
Father forgive us, let Your love come shining through.

Turning from our wicked ways, praying and seeking Your face
Father, hear from Heaven and heal our land
In sackcloth and with praise
Thank You for mercy and your grace
Father, hear from Heaven and heal our land.

Heal our land, please, Jesus, heal our land.

No more do we let the ----------
Generations dying younger than before
Still the wining and the revelry, little babies mimic what they see
No more, oh, no more.

Father, forgive us for we know not what we do
Woh, please forgive us, Father.
Father forgive us, let Your love come shining through.

Turning from our wicked ways, praying and seeking Your face
Father, hear from Heaven and heal our land
In sackcloth and with praise
Thank You for mercy and Your grace
Father, hear from heaven and heal our land.

Heal our land, heal our land, heal our land.

Jehovah-jireh, You are
Jehovah abba, You are
Jehovah-shammah, You are.

----------

Heal our land, please, Jesus,
Heal our land, Father, heal our land
Heal our land, heal our land
Heal our land....

If my people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray
I will hear from heaven and heal the land.

A LIVING MEH LIFE
By Mighty Dougla

Anywhere you go, is the same cry, people never, never satisfy
All where you go, is the same old cry, people never, never satisfy
They could have cash high as a mountain
Still for all they always complaining
Before they try to enjoy life and have a little fun
They want to own the moon and the sun.

Not me!

I living my life and I leaving no room for regret
No dead man ever get up and tell me
He had a good time in the grave as yet
I intend to enjoy mih money, I intend to live mih life happy
Man, I eating and I drinking and I having mih good fun
Because I know when I dead, I done.

I did not say to act crazy and squander all your money
But why should you work like a donkey and not enjoy a lil luxury
You might end up like mih friend John did
He never satisfy, now he down in the grave
But you know he wife happy with a fella name Freddy
Spreading joy with mih man money.

So is that's why,

I living my life and I leaving no room for regret
No dead man ever get up and tell me
He had a good time down dey as yet
I intend to enjoy mih money, I intend to live mih life happy
Man, I eating and I drinking and I having mih good fun
Because I know when I dead, I done.

An Indian fella name Ghany used to starve just to save money
And he used to bury this money underneath a big breadfruit tree
You know I find out the secret, as Ghany gone, I went and I tief it
You know the man went crazy, start questioning the tree
He say the tree that tief the money.

So is that's why,

I living my life and I leaving no room for regret
No dead man ever get up and tell me
He had a good time in the grave as yet
I intend to enjoy mih money, I intend to live mih life happy
Man, I eating and I drinking and I having mih good fun
Because I know when I dead, I done.

Some people may say I'm a madman, I say to enjoy life while you can
Try your best to be happy because in life have no guarantee
You might have big plans for the future
You come and get knock down by a motor car
Well, is you gone down the line, leaving everything behind
You sure to die with a worried mind

Not me!

I living my life and I leaving no room for regret
No dead man ever get up and tell me
"Look ah wabine going dey!" as yet
I intend to enjoy mih money, I intend to live mih life happy
Man, I eating and I drinking and I having mih good fun
Because I know when I dead, I done.

Basement Party [Song]

BASEMENT PARTY
By André Tanker [25/9/1941-28/2/2003]

Downtown rockers, uptown dudes
Streamlined ladies in spike heel shoes
Green card lovers in a corner dancing blues
Illegal immigrants, dem jumping up the most
To sweet soul music and disco, rhythm and blues
Run the dub soca calypso but doh get confuse now
Mister DJ 'cause we put all these rhythms together
And we gih dem some blaze
You know the whole place start jumping
And the vibrations raise. [They raise for days]

In a basement party in a New York city
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie.

Well, the whole place was a ram up and a cram up with people
'Til dey couldn't hold no more
But still dey kept on coming
If you see them squeezing through the door
Check the lady in the kitchen,
She got the peas and rice coming up hot, coming up hot
With some big, red peppers, put the Caribbean flavour in the pot
Keep the rhythm jamming hot.

In a basement party in a New York city
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie
In a basement party [the rhythm jamming] in a New York city
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie.

Well, only one thing was missing to make this party complete
Just then I heard a knocking
It was a visit from the police on the beat
Dey say dey just get a complaint from a neighbour on the block
And the music got to turn down real low or the party gonna stop
But the jamming --------- stronger and the music stay free
You know the police get lock inside a rhythm
Whole night I see dem searching for the key to one love [one melody].

In a basement party in a New York city
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie
Basement party in a New York city
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie.

Basement party, basement party
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie
Basement party, basement party
Downtown shakedown, uptown boogie...

Child of the Universe (Remember who you are) [Song]

Uploaded by solmanmusic

CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE
By Solman

The stars are my ancient ancestors
Shining light out to guide and direct us
In the dark of the night they connect us
To the soul of the universe
They creep silently through the nighttime sky
And make their way every day, every night
Before your birth and the earth they shone their light
Ancient in the truth of our eyes
And in the light that they shine
Are holy scriptures in the sky
With these words to remind:

Sons and daughters of the universe
The world rejoiced at the moment of your birth
We celebrate when you realise your worth
Child of the universe
Sons and daughters of this Creation
Family to the earth and the sun
You bless the ground that you walk upon
In your soul is the foundation.

So when the light of your life just don't show
And when it feels like your heart just can't grow
When the heights of your mind only feel low
You find your soul and you find your way home
When it feels like your life is a hard road
When it feels like you are holding a heavy load
When you feel you want to leave but you can't go
You find your soul and you find your way home
And then you find your way home
You find your way home
And then you find your way home.

Well, in the stars of the sky
Unto your soul you will find
Well, in these words to remind:

Sons and daughters of the universe
The world rejoiced at the moment of your birth
We celebrate when you realise your worth
Child of the universe
Sons and daughters of this Creation
Family to the earth and the sun
You bless the ground that you walk upon
In your soul is the foundation.
In your soul is the foundation
In your soul is the foundation.

Remember who you are
Remember who you are.

In your soul is the truth and the light of the stars
You are the artist and you are the art
You are the flame and the original spark
Whole universe in the space of your heart

Remember who you are
Remember who you are

In your soul is the truth and the light of the stars
You are the artist and you are the art
You are the flame and the original spark
Whole universe in the space of your heart.

Remember, remember, remember,oh  remember,
Remember, remember, remember oh oh oh
Remember who you are
Remember who you are.

In your soul is the truth and the light of the stars
You are the artist and you are the art
You are the flame and the original spark
Whole universe in the space of your heart.

Remember who you are
Remember who you are.

In your soul is the truth and the light of the stars
You are the artist and you are the art
You are the flame and the original spark
Whole universe in the space of your heart

Remember remember, remember, oh remember
Remember, remember, remember oh-oh-oh

Oooh ooooh oooooh...

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Solman. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

I wish every child could hear the message in this song being spoken directly to him or her, if not from the lips of their parents, then from any loving guardian, teacher, family member:

"Sons and daughters of the universe
The world rejoiced at the moment of your birth.
We celebrate when you realise your worth
Child of the universe"

Some human beings leave this world without ever once really believing this about themselves.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

LOUISE
By Lord Beginner

Louise, hope is not in vain, please come back again
Louise, hope is not in vain, please come back again
Miss your romance when you leave
Miss your bliss, I had to grieve
Oh gyal, I now realise that I lost mih paradise.

Darling doudou, why you make me blue, oh lord?
Every time I turn in the bed, I take the pillow for you.

Darling, do you wonder why sweet love can never die?
Louise, girl, I must confess, yours is of the best
You can bring a lion just like a lamb
You got something that can really charm
Oh gyal, I now realise that I lost the paradise.

Darling doudou, why you make me blue, oh lord?
Every time I turn in the bed, I take the pillow for you.

Louise, speaking broadmindedly, you are just like the honey bee
Oh, with the dames I know, none ever treat me so
I love to hear your happy tone
Retaliate with the things you own
Oh gyal, look I now realise I lost the paradise.

Darling doudou, why you make me blue, oh gyal?
Every time I turn in the bed, I take the pillow for you.

Louise, telling you candidly, you've got something holding me
Oh, what it is at all that made me had to bawl
Bring it back, I'm paralysed
For you have me victimised
Oh gyal, look I now realise that I lost mih paradise.

Darling doudou, why you make me blue, oh lord?
Every time I turn in the bed, I take the pillow for you.

Say what you mean [Song]

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN
By Young Killer

He's my brother! Here comes my brother! Hello, brother!

"We black and proud. We black and proud," is our words of consolation
But be careful when we saying them, it can extend on racialism
The Killer say, "Forget all this blackness and think of togetherness
Forget all this proudness and let's look for happiness."

Stop saying...

You black and proud, you black and proud, for these are the words we say
But the method in which we living will keep us more black each day
The Killer say, "Love ye one another whether white, black, brown or else
And try to treat your brother as you would treat yourself."

Our great grands came from Africa, most as slaves that came here and died
So we should have our equal rights and that cannot be denied
But first we must think of togetherness, the white and black, the young and old
For say what you want, we are the children of this world.

So why say...

You glad you black, you know you black, you so black and beautiful
Nothing eats a man to death as when he is deceitful
The Killer say, "Love ye one another whether white, black, brown or else
And try to treat your sister as you would treat yourself."

Our leaders are misleading, never mind what the hell they preach
'Cause they themselves never practice the same things they teach
They just want to hold command on you for them to be the king
And while they living luxurious, you is the one who still suffering.

But bawling...

You glad you black, you know you black, you so black and beautiful
Nothing eats a man to death as when he is deceitful
The Killer say, "Love ye one another whether white and black or old
For say what you like, we are the children of this world."

SCORPION
By Atilla the Hun
Sung in Trinbagonian French Patois

Eskoupyon, i vlé yon déjinen [Eskoupyon, vlé yon déjinen]

A Note From The Gull

Thank you so much, Atilla.

In my experience, some of the most engaging songs are about the tiny creatures with which we share the earth. For the duration of the song, Atilla helped me to occupy the persona of a scorpion without the use of any psychotropic drugs but by employing a simple rhythm and the trance inducing repetition of the hypnotic, "Eskoupyon, vlé yon déjinen | Scorpion wants a meal."  As you see, I am prone to fall.

This song brought me to a deeper realisation of a spirit world which appears subterranean only because we are so disconnected and adrift. The song breaks through the fog and focuses the mind on the creature which usually we either ignore or fear/hate.  The scorpion is alive like us and tiny as it is, it also needs to find nourishment. "Piti kon mwen yé, mwen vlé yon déjinen | As little as I am, I want a meal."

Here there are worlds within worlds and although the others of his kind are hidden from view, Atilla conjures up an extended community of its family members and friends, a legion from which this tiny creature emerges to command our attention and remind us of our connection. The scorpion too, is part of creation. Atilla, acknowledges its personhood and the artistry which had gone into its design and spirit. "Sé mwen doré, doré | It is I, the gilded one." The pathos of life is never far and the scorpion reveals that it has been hurt.  I prefer to believe that it is hurt only by its hunger because I do not want to entertain the possibility that it has been wounded by some preemptive strike by a human. Scorpions and most humans do not have a pleasant relationship.

I am grateful to Atilla for arranging this introduction. Sometimes we say that something alters our consciousness as if we are being led away from that which is normal. But what if "normal" is actually the altered state which we now occupy after having strayed from our authentic selves.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.

Trinidad Dictionary [Song]

TRINIDAD DICTIONARY
By Mighty Conqueror

The Trinidadian slang is amusing
But most foreigners may find it confusing
So as I see, it is necessary
Trinidad should have its own dictionary
We all consent, English very hard to learn
So we invent a language of our own
But if you just land here, you in a monkey pants
To understand, you wouldn't stand a chance.

Like if we say, she try to mamaguy he, this jagabat
Well, not a foreigner at all can interpret that
That means she try to make he a coonoomoonoo
Meaning she want him mind she and she sweet man too
So he beat the wabine 'til she bazodee
As you should see, you can't disagree with me, pappy
Webster shoulda come to Trinidad to complete he dictionary.
You mustn't doubt me.

Take for instance, one day they hear a native say
"Tabanca have mih neighbour looking so tootoolbay."
A foreigner go bound to jump off he seat
And say, "Tabanca is a sweet piece of meat to eat."
And if you try to convince him, he may tell you you lie
Tabanca can't bring no tears to a big man eye
No, no, no, no, no ---------------
And go and tell he wife, "Tabanca for breakfast, please."

Hear we again, this big belly woman so conconsa
The mirasmee child getting cocobay
When you try to bamboozle your partner, Fred
You giving him a six for a nine instead
So they really should give the first prize to we
For our splendid speaking ability, you see
Webster shoulda come to Trinidad to complete he dictionary.
Doh doubt Conky.

Well, no one could state how these words originate
But who invent them, they really great
And I feel the time go reach, the government will teach
The school children to use them in speech
And you may hear the Doc saying, "Sukey, you too mauvais langue."
Or "Solo boy, you feel you is a wajank?"
But I betting anybody two cup ah tea
None of dem ent go search no dictionary.

Hear we again, you have cocoa in the sun, well look out for rain
That is a local quotation we ------------
And if you have cocobay try and doh get yaws
As you could see, the island ram-cram with stars
Now they does say Shakespeare great in philosophy
But they lucky he never tangle with we, you see
Webster shoulda come to Trinidad to complete he dictionary
Doh doubt Conky

So then when a tourist visit we island
He wouldn't have to get heself in confusion
Because he know the same kind of slangs like we
Using words like pappyshow and bazodee... But how you mean?
And if by chance, you get him in difficulty
He may say, "Wait!." and take out he dictionary
I bet you bound to get in an awful rage
If when you talking to he, he can't find the page.

Another thing, every week we'll have to change this dictionary
To try and keep up with the slangs in La Trinity
And when the year end, print a fresh pile again
As you should see, we really would be holding strain
But it would help tourism, this you must agree
A word like bobolee, of course, could be found under B, you see
Webster shoulda come to Trinidad to complete he dictionary.

Thank you, Mighty Conqueror.

All Trinbagonians and others interested in the vernacular language should have access to a copy of Lise Winer's excellent Dictionary of the English/Creole of Trinidad and Tobago.
