BAMBOO DANCE
Black Czar [Panama]
One night I took a chance
And I went to a bamboo dance...aha!
One night I took a chance
And I went to a bamboo dance
Believe me, the rhythm did sound so sweet
But I went into the dance to amuse my feet
And what they sang...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!
I mean, I didn't take no chance
The night when I went to this bamboo dance
I was sitting in a corner
And the old lady choose me for a partner
Then she started to wiggy wam
Ey lord, I think she was a wild Indian
And what she said...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!
In the middle of the night
Somebody went and douse out the light
Everybody holding their pose
Started to rub one another nose
The old lady said, "Black Czar, hold me tight
And don't let me go til they turn on the light."
And what she said...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!
I said, "Old lady, you old."
She said, "I old but I got control."
She said, "Young boy, young as I feel.
Look how I make my touches on my heel."
Then the old lady started to wheel
That is where I vex and roll down the sleeve
And what she said...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!
[This is the Czar! Hear the band?]
She said, "This rhythm for true
I love the rhythm from this here bamboo.
This rhythm just make me feel glad
It remind of my days down in Trinidad."
Then the old lady then start to shake
And twisting her body' round like a snake
And what she said...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!
I tell you, I was wringing down wet
When I heard the rhythm from the clarinet
Ey lord, the melody get right in my bone
When I hear the note from the saxophone
The old lady said, "This is bacchanal.
Yay, young boy, don't stop it at all."
And what she said...
Chorus:
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance
Oh yeah, join the bamboo dance
Old and young can take the chance!

A Note From The Gull
Thank you, Black Czar, for this wonderful piece of music that just entices listeners to jump to their feet and join the dance. I will update this note in the near future to include everything that I can learn about this music as this is the first time that I am hearing the work of this Panamanian calypsonian. If you can point me to any sources, please do, since I am not finding much on the Internet.
"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.
Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.
Mweh ka allay!
