KAISE BANI
By Sundar Popo

Kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.
Kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

I went Sangre Grande to meet Lal Beharry
I went Sangre Grande to meet Lal Beharry
I pull out mih --------- and ---------------
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Me and mih darling was flying in a plane
Me and mih darling was flying in a plane
The plane catch ah fire and we fall inside the cane.

Kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Ah beating mih dhol and ah singing mih song
Ah beating mih dhol and ah singing mih song
The onliest thing ah missing is mih bottle ah rum.
Kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Jack and Jill went up ah hill to fetch ah pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after
Little Jack Horner sit in a corner eating his Christmas pie
He put in his thumb and pull out a plum and said, "What a good boy am I!"

Kaise bani, kaise bani
Kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Kaise bani, kaise bani
Kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Kaise bani, kaise bani
Kaise bani, kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani
Phulari bina chatani kaise bani.

Although it is my intention to faithfully transcribe I do not get all the words and I have a knack for hearing the wrong thing. Please feel free to correct me or to fill in the words that I miss by dropping me a message via e-mail. I'd be forever grateful. Thanks in advance! ..............................................................................................................................

A Note From The Gull

Thank you, Sundar Popo. I mentioned elsewhere that I am a fan of Kanchan and Babla and that I enjoy their versions of our chutney songs but if you listen to Sundar Popo's Kaise Bani, you will taste the bandhanya. There is something vital and pure about this rendition that you don't get in the Kanchan/Babla remake. I may be mistaken but I think I am hearing the sound of hands clapping in the chorus and this adds to the immediacy and liveliness of the song.

I do not understand Bhojpuri so I cannot tell readers with any certainty what the words in the chorus of this song mean [I read somewhere that it could mean, "How do you make/enjoy phulourie without chutney."] but the music transcends all challenges and I just want to get to my feet and dance. I embrace the celebration of life in the rhythm. I hear clearly each instrument's contribution as they surround the voice of the singer and to me it is all just golden.

Because our ancestors came here, our hearts sync with many different rhythms and T&T mixes them into one. Because our ancestors came here, our limbs know how to move to different dances and T&T mixes them into one. Because our ancestors came here, we smile deep inside before the grins hit our faces and T&T mixes them into that one distinct Trini smile that you can recognise anywhere in the world.

Thank you all for the music of my homeland and now that I am far away, the homeland in our music to which I return.

"Patria est communis omnium parens" - Our native land is the common parent of us all. Keep it beautiful, make it even more so.

Blessed is all of creation
Blessed be my beautiful people
Blessed be the day of our awakening
Blessed is my country
Blessed are her patient hills.
